Do You Know?

Here are some good to know stuff!Feel free to add some more!

Cooking Tips:

  • If the gravy is too salty, just knead a little dough of maida or wheat flour and make small balls. Add these to the simmering gravy and let it simmer for 4-5 mins. These will soak the excess salt.Remove them before serving.
  • Excess salt in any dish can be brought down by adding diced potatoes, tomatoes or a teaspoon of sugar.
  • Sprinkle some salt in a frying pan to prevent oil from splashing.
  • When you soak rice and urad dal for idlis and dosas, wash everything thoroughly before soaking. Later use the soaked water while grinding. If you wash rice and dal after soaking you will lose most of the vitamins.
  • To thicken any gravy or soup add corn flour to it. It is an excellent thickening agent. Remember to mix it in good water before adding to avoid any lumps.
  • Add a pinch of sugar while cooking any green leaf vegetables. This will help maintain the bright green color.
  • Remove the stems from chilies before storing them. This will keep them fresher for a long time.
  • To peel an orange or a tomato less messily, dunk it in hot water for a minute or two and then in cold water for the same amount of time. You will have an easy to peel orange or tomato.
  • When you prepare butter at home, you get buttermilk as a by-product. Boil this buttermilk at medium heat, and you will get paneer at no extra cost.
  • Add a little sugar while frying onions; they will turn pink or brown faster.
  • Banana peel is also loaded with potassium and can be used to reduce wrinkles around the eyes. Rubbing a fresh banana peel, yellow side out, under and around the eyes can reduce worry lines and bags.
  • A banana peel can also reduce the itching and swelling from an insect bite. Again just rub the peel on the bite or for extended relief tape some peel to the bite.
  • To make the curd thick and firm consistency, add a little milk powder to the milk while boiling.
  • to prevent cut apple pieces from turning black mix some lemon juice, toss it and stored in a plastic bag. this can be added to the fruit salad at the time of serving!
  • while boiling milk if u suspect that it is about to turn sour then add a pinch or two of cooking soda.It will prevent the milk from turning sour and the milk can be used normally.
  • If you want to enhance color of gravy, then when u add oil to pan , when the oil is warm add sugar and caramel it. it gives nice red color to gravy.
  • If you want to protect your lemons for a long time then keep them in a bowl of water in the fridge.
  • For cutting onions without tears, wash the peeled onions under running water before cutting them.
  • If you’re sauteing your onions, make sure that you don’t add any salt until after they turn golden brown in color.
  • Trick to peel small onios very fast..run through the onions in hot boiling water for 45 seconds.Take out the onions and blanch it under cold water.trim edges and peels come out very easily!

  1. Hi there!

My name is Steve Walters and I recently started blogging at http://www.eatingbangkok.com, which is currently being updated with recipes, but in the next few months will be my vehicle for covering the food and restaurant scene in Bangkok Thailand.

I am now in the process of meeting as many food bloggers as I can and I found your site http://www.manethindi.com recently and was pretty impressed. I've added your site to my Foodie Blogs list here: http://www.eatingbangkok.com/foodie-blogs/ and would also like to add you to my blogroll.

If you could add my site to your blogroll and write back to let me know it has been added (foodie [at] eatingbangkok.com) I will add you to mine as well and the exchange would be greatly appreciated!

As you might imagine I am very excited to get moved to Bangkok and get started on covering the food scene there as I feel it is an area that isn't well covered by English speaking bloggers. I plan on adding loads of great reviews, pictures and even video and will be holding contests as well. It should be fun, entertaining and informative for everyone that visits.

Thank you so much in advance for adding me to your blogroll and I look forward to reading your posts (I've subscribed!) and maybe even featuring some of your own posts as I do plan on a weekly roundup of Thai themed recipes and posts from other food bloggers.

    Warm regards,
    Steve
